New Delhi: Jay Shah has been elected unopposed as the next Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC). Shah, who has served as the Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) since October 2019 and as the Chairman of the Asian Cricket Council since January 2021, will officially assume his new role on December 1, 2024.

Shah's election follows the decision of current ICC Chairman Greg Barclay not to seek a third term. As the sole nominee for the position, Shah's election was confirmed without opposition.

In his statement, Shah emphasized his commitment to expanding the global reach of cricket, particularly in light of the sport's inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. He views this as a pivotal opportunity for cricket's growth and aims to make the sport more inclusive and popular worldwide.

"I am humbled by the nomination as the Chair of the International Cricket Council," Shah said, as quoted by the ICC. "I am committed to working closely with the ICC team and our member nations to further globalize cricket."

Jay Shah's election marks a significant moment in the ICC's history as he becomes the youngest person to lead the organization. He joins a distinguished list of Indians who have held the ICC Chairmanship, including Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N. Srinivasan, and Shashank Manohar. His leadership is expected to usher in a new era for cricket on the global stage.
